The term “Homo sapiens” was coined by the Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century in his work “Systema Naturae” (System of Nature). He introduced this binomial nomenclature to classify humans within the animal kingdom, with “Homo” referring to the genus and “sapiens” meaning “wise” or “intelligent” in Latin.
