The main function of your HPA axis is to release cortisol (a glucocorticoid, or steroid hormone). This kicks off short-term bodily changes that allow you to respond to stress. The stress response is an automatic and instinctual process.
– The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a neuroendocrine system involved in the body’s response to stress.
– It triggers the release of cortisol and other stress hormones, which mobilize energy reserves, suppress immune function, and enhance readiness to cope with stressors.
