Rigor mortis is the postmortem stiffening of the muscles due to biochemical changes in the body after death. It occurs when the body loses its supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is necessary for muscle relaxation.
Typically, rigor mortis begins to set in within 2 to 6 hours after death, starting in the smaller muscles (like those in the face) and progressing to larger muscle groups. It generally peaks around 12 to 24 hours postmortem and can last for about 24 to 84 hours, after which the muscles will begin to relax again as decomposition progresses. Factors such as temperature and physical condition can influence the timing of rigor mortis.
