Dermal fibroblasts are key structural cells found within the dermis. They form the deeper layer of the skin. These cells are the primary cells responsible for forming and maintaining the extracellular matrix (ECM). ECM forms a complex network of proteins that provides the skin intact structure, strength, elasticity, and resilience. Among the most important components synthesised by dermal fibroblasts are collagen (especially type I and III), elastin, and glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid.
