Treatment for PCOD aims to alleviate symptoms, regulate menstrual cycles, and address underlying hormonal imbalances. Lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight management are often recommended as first-line therapy. Oral contraceptive pills may be prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and reduce androgen levels, thereby improving symptoms such as hirsutism and acne. Metformin, a medication commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, may be prescribed to improve insulin sensitivity in women with PCOD, particularly those with insulin resistance. Fertility treatments such as ovulation induction with medications like clomiphene citrate or assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be necessary for women with PCOD who are trying to conceive.
