The cell membrane, or plasma membrane, is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. The bilayer provides a semi-permeable barrier that controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. The proteins facilitate various functions, including transport, signal reception, and cell recognition.
