Excel files have a default extension of Xls. The default file extension for Excel files in older versions of Microsoft Excel, such as Excel 97-2003, is .xls. This extension is commonly used to indicate that a file is in the Excel binary file format. However, it’s worth noting that with the introduction of newer versions of Excel, such as Excel 2007 and onwards, the default file extension has been changed to .xlsx for Excel workbook files and .xlsm for Excel macro-enabled workbook files. These newer file formats are based on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard. Therefore, while .xls is the traditional default extension for Excel files, it’s essential to consider the specific version of Excel being used, as it may utilize different default file extensions.
