Pilates focuses on controlled resistance, endurance, and muscle activation rather than extremely heavy lifting. The exercises engage muscles for longer periods using body weight, springs, resistance bands, or reformer machines. This style of training strengthens muscles without overloading them. Because movements are precise and repetitive, muscles become more toned and defined while maintaining flexibility. Pilates also emphasizes lengthening through movement, which contributes to the lean appearance many people notice.
