Yusuf Adil Shah founded the Bijapur Sultanate in 1490 after declaring independence from the Bahmani Sultanate. Adil Shah was previously appointed governor of Daulatabad by the Bahmani rulers, and then took control of Bijapur after the execution of Mahmud Gawan, the former tarafdar. Adil Shah is also credited with developing Bijapur into a significant town.
