The first Indian Governor-General of India was Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, commonly known as C. Rajagopalachari. He served as the Governor-General from June 21, 1948, to January 26, 1950, following the independence of India. He was the last person to hold the position of Governor-General, as the office was abolished when India became a republic on January 26, 1950.
In 1948, C. Rajagopalachari became the only Indian governor-general. The governor-general’s role was almost entirely ceremonial, with power being exercised on a day-to-day basis by the Indian cabinet. After the nation became a republic in 1950, the president of India continued to perform the same functions.
