The Maratha newspaper was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1881.
It was an English-language newspaper launched along with his Marathi paper Kesari. Through The Maratha, Tilak strongly criticised British rule and spread nationalist ideas among educated Indians.
At that time, newspapers were not just for news — they were powerful tools to create political awareness and unite people against colonial rule. Tilak used the press very effectively in the freedom movement.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak published two newspapers, namely, ‘The Kesari’ in Marathi, and ‘The Mahratta’ in English, to create awareness among the people
