Japan’s name in English comes from the Portuguese word “Japão,” which itself is derived from the Dutch “Japan.”
But the Japanese name for the country is “Nihon” (日本) or “Nippon,” which means “origin of the sun,” reflecting Japan’s geographical location to the east of the Asian continent.
