The structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) was discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953. They proposed the double helix structure of DNA, which explained how genetic information is stored and transmitted. Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray diffraction images of DNA were crucial in their discovery. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for their discovery.
