X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a German physicist. He made this discovery on November 8, 1895, while experimenting with cathode rays. Röntgen noticed that a fluorescent screen in his lab started to glow even though it was not in the direct path of the cathode rays. He called these unknown rays “X-rays” because of their mysterious nature. For this groundbreaking discovery, Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
