Alessandro Volta – In 1800, Volta, an Italian physicist and chemist, invented the first practical electrical battery known as the Voltaic pile. This consisted of alternating discs of zinc and copper separated by cardboard soaked in saltwater, which produced a continuous and stable electric current.
