The Roman Emperor who famously made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire was Emperor Constantine the Great. In the early 4th century AD, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, which legalized Christianity and granted tolerance to all religions within the empire. He played a significant role in the Christianization of the Roman Empire and convened the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which aimed to settle theological disputes within Christianity.
