International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated on May 1st each year to honor the contributions of workers worldwide and advocate for workers’ rights, better working conditions, and fair wages. It originated in the late 19th century labor movement, particularly the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday. Since then, it has become a significant day for labor movements, unions, and workers’ rights activism globally.
