The wheel was first invented around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia. It initially appeared as a potter’s wheel before being adapted for use in transportation around 3000 BCE.
The wheel is believed to have been invented in the 4th millennium BC in Lower Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) by the Sumerian people. The first wheels were likely solid disks or sliced tree trunks, and were used for pottery, not transportation. The discs were hollowed out to make them lighter around 2000 BC.
