A silt fence should only be removed once the upslope area has been fully stabilized with permanent vegetation or landscaping. Removing a silt fence too early can lead to a sudden discharge of sediment if a storm occurs before the grass has grown in. Once the ground is stable, the fabric is pulled up, the stakes are removed, and any accumulated sediment is spread out or hauled away. The area where the silt fence was trenched should be smoothed over and seeded to match the surrounding environment.
