The fabric of a modern silt fence is typically made from a woven or non-woven geotextile synthetic polymer. Polypropylene is the most common material used because it offers high tensile strength and resistance to tearing and ultraviolet degradation. The material must be porous enough to allow water to filter through slowly while remaining tight enough to trap fine sediment particles. The supporting stakes can be made of durable hardwood or heavy-duty steel t-posts depending on the soil conditions and project requirements. Wire backing is sometimes added to reinforce the fabric in areas with high runoff volumes.
