Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure a silt fence continues to function properly throughout a project. The barrier should be inspected after every significant rainfall event to check for damage, tears, or collapsing sections. Accumulated sediment must be removed when it reaches about one-third to one-half the height of the fabric to prevent structural failure. If the fabric becomes torn or the posts become loose, repairs must be made immediately to maintain the integrity of the barrier. Once the upslope area is permanently stabilized with vegetation or paving, the structure can be safely removed.
