The term for this phenomenon is “lunar eclipse.” During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. The reddish color, often referred to as a “blood moon,” is caused by sunlight refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere, with shorter wavelengths of light being scattered, leaving behind longer wavelengths that appear red.
