A flash flood occurs suddenly and intensely, often within six hours of heavy rainfall or sudden releases of water, leading to rapid rises in water levels in small streams and urban areas. In contrast, a river flood develops more slowly as water levels in rivers rise gradually over days or weeks, typically as a result of prolonged rainfall or snowmelt.
