The NITI Aayog SDG India Index is a tool developed by NITI Aayog, the Government of India’s policy think tank, to track and measure the progress of Indian states and union territories towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals, set by the United Nations, aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, environmental sustainability, and justice by 2030.
Key Features of the SDG India Index:
Comprehensive Assessment: The index evaluates states and UTs across 16 out of the 17 SDGs, using a set of 113 indicators aligned with India’s National Indicator Framework. The indicators cover various domains such as health, education, gender equality, clean water, energy, economic growth, and more.
Scoring and Ranking: States and UTs are scored on a scale of 0-100 for each goal and overall performance. The scores are used to classify them into categories: Aspirant (0-49), Performer (50-64), Front-Runner (65-99), and Achiever (100).
Purpose and Impact: The index serves multiple purposes:
Benchmarking Progress: It provides a comparative analysis of the progress made by different regions in India.
Promoting Cooperative Federalism: It encourages healthy competition among states and UTs, fostering a collaborative approach to achieving sustainable development.
Guiding Policy and Investment: The index helps policymakers identify priority areas for intervention and investment, aligning with national and global SDG targets.
Public Awareness: By making information on sustainable development accessible, the index raises public awareness and encourages community participation in achieving these goals.
