CrO has an oxidation number +2, and is a basic oxide, while CrO3 is acidic with a +6 oxidation number. Cr2O3 is amphoteric. Even if it is insoluble in water, it dissolves in acid to give hydrated chromium ions [Cr(H2O)6]3+. It reacts with alkali to yield chromite ions.
