An oxidation reaction is a chemical process in which a substance loses electrons. This can also involve the addition of oxygen to a substance or the removal of hydrogen from it. During oxidation, the oxidation state of the element increases. Oxidation reactions are always coupled with reduction reactions, where another substance gains the electrons that are lost.
