A lahar is a volcanic mudflow or debris flow composed of water-saturated volcanic ash and debris. It occurs when volcanic activity melts ice or snow on a volcano, or during heavy rainfall, causing the volcanic material to mix with water and flow down the slopes, potentially reaching river valleys and causing significant damage.
