The introduction of the middle stump in cricket is linked to an incident involving the famous English cricketer John “Jack” Lister in the 18th century. Prior to the 1770s, the stumps used in cricket were only two in number, placed at either end of the wicket. However, during a match in 1775, Lister’s wicket was damaged in a way that led to confusion over whether a delivery had been cleanly bowled or not.
