Upanishad means “sitting down near”, referring to the student sitting down near the teacher while receiving esoteric knowledge. Monier-Williams’ Sanskrit Dictionary adds that, “Upanishad means ‘setting to rest ignorance by revealing the knowledge of the supreme spirit.’
