There are Several factors can cause sand dunes to move:
* Wind speed and direction
* Dune slope
* Moisture content of the sand
* Particle size and shape of the sand grains
* Vegetation on the dune
* The presence of stabilizing structures like fences or barriers
* A lack of stabilizing vegetation is more important for dune formation than high winds.
Dunes move due to the action of wind, which picks up and transports sand particles through a process called saltation, where particles are lifted and then hop along the surface. The movement occurs when wind velocity exceeds the threshold needed to move sand. Over time, this leads to the gradual shifting of dunes. Vegetation can stabilize dunes by anchoring the sand, but in desert environments where vegetation is sparse, dunes can migrate more freely.
