Some of the Government Schemes for pregnant women in Tamil Nadu: TN Dr. Muthulakshmi Maternity Benefit Scheme, Amma Maternity Nutrition Kit Scheme, Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram
Tamil Nadu’s Maternity Benefit Scheme, initiated in 1987 to combat infant and maternal mortality, has progressively increased financial aid to pregnant women, starting with Rs. 200 in 1989 and reaching Rs. 18,000 by 2017. Renamed the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, it offered increased support over the years, including a monthly benefit for six months around the childbirth period. In collaboration with the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) since 2017, additional funds were designated for first-time mothers. Aiming to alleviate the financial burden on poor pregnant women, ensuring they can afford nutritious diets and counteract income loss during pregnancy and postpartum periods, the scheme targets a broad demographic, including Sri Lankan refugees and social security scheme members, for comprehensive support.
