Osmosis plays an important role in the transportation of nutrients and the release of metabolic waste products within a living cell. It stabilizes the internal movement of water and intracellular fluid levels within a cell. Osmosis also controls cell-to-cell diffusion and maintains the mechanical structure of a cell.
It helps to maintain the balance between water and intercellular fluid levels in living organism(plants and animals). Osmosis can cause plant cells to become turgid depending on the concentration of water molecule inside and outside the cell. It also controls the diffusion of water between cells and higher osmotic pressure can help plants from drought injury.
