The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and use of substances that are responsible for ozone depletion. These substances include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and other ozone-depleting chemicals commonly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, foam blowing, and fire suppression systems. The treaty aims to gradually eliminate the use of these harmful substances in order to prevent further damage to the ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
