The East India Company first struck coins in the names of Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir.
The EIC asked the Mughal Empire for permission to mint rupees in Madras, and the Chinapattan mint began issuing coins in the name of Aurangzeb. The coins had poetic verses on the obverse praising Aurangzeb’s rule, and a distinctive verse on the reverse that was copied by later Mughal emperors. The style was orthodox, with no imagery or democratic symbols.
