CGST is levied by the central government on intra-state transactions, while SGST is levied by the state government on the same transactions. Both CGST and SGST rates are set by the GST Council and are collected independently by the respective governments. The combined tax rate (CGST + SGST) equals the total GST rate applicable to a transaction.
