Social marketing differs from commercial marketing in its objectives and focus. While commercial marketing aims to generate profit by promoting products or services, social marketing seeks to create positive social change by influencing behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions. While both use marketing techniques such as segmentation, messaging, and evaluation, social marketing prioritizes societal welfare over financial gain. It addresses issues such as public health, environmental sustainability, and community development, aiming to improve the well-being of individuals and communities rather than solely maximizing sales or revenue.
Social marketing and commercial marketing both use marketing techniques, but their goals are different. Commercial marketing is mainly about selling products or services and making a profit. For example, a company might advertise a new phone to convince people to buy it.
Social marketing, on the other hand, aims to change people’s behavior for the benefit of individuals or society. It might encourage people to quit smoking, wear seat belts, recycle, or save water.
So, in simple terms: commercial marketing sells products; social marketing promotes positive behavior and social change.
