Buddhist monks practice meditation through various methods, each aimed at cultivating different aspects of the mind and spirit. One common form is Vipassana, or Insight Meditation, which focuses on developing a deep understanding of the nature of reality by observing bodily sensations and thoughts. Another important practice is Samatha, or Calm-Abiding Meditation, which aims to develop deep concentration and tranquility by focusing on a single object or thought, such as the breath. Metta, or Loving-Kindness Meditation, involves generating feelings of compassion and love towards oneself and others, helping to foster a sense of goodwill and connectedness.
In Zen Buddhism, Zazen, or Seated Meditation, is practiced by sitting in a specific posture and concentrating on the breath or a koan, a paradoxical question or statement designed to provoke deep thought and insight. Each type of meditation helps monks develop mindfulness, concentration, and a greater understanding of their inner experiences.
