Osmosis is the movement of solvent molecules (usually water) across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration, in order to equalize solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane. In biology, osmosis is crucial for processes such as water uptake by plant roots, regulation of cell volume, and kidney function in animals.
