The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Its primary function is to facilitate the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the body and the environment. Inhaled air enters the respiratory tract through the nose or mouth, travels down the trachea and bronchi, and eventually reaches the alveoli in the lungs, where gas exchange occurs between the air and the bloodstream. Carbon dioxide is removed from the bloodstream and expelled from the body during exhalation, while oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream for distribution to cells throughout the body.
