Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a lifelong autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The body have compromised ability to produce enough insulin and regulate blood sugar level. In past decades, stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising area of research for people with type 1 diabetes, but it is important to understand where the science currently stands.
Regenerative medicine with use of stem cell therapy aims to replace or regenerate damaged pancreatic beta cells. Researchers are exploring ways to use stem cells to create new insulin-producing cells that can function like natural pancreatic cells.
