Mahatma Gandhi established several ashrams (spiritual retreats) throughout his life to promote his ideals of simplicity, self-reliance, and communal living. Some of the most notable ones include:
1. Sabarmati Ashram (Ahmedabad, Gujarat) – Established in 1917, this was one of the key centers for Gandhi’s activities and served as a base for his campaigns, including the Salt March.
2. Sevagram Ashram(Wardha, Maharashtra) – Founded in 1936, it became the center of Gandhi’s activities during the later years of his life and played a significant role in the Indian independence movement.
3. Tolstoy Farm (near Johannesburg, South Africa) – Established in 1910, this ashram was part of Gandhi’s efforts to build a community based on his principles of non-violence and self-sufficiency during his time in South Africa.
These ashrams were crucial in shaping Gandhi’s philosophy and were centers for his campaigns and movements against colonial rule.
