“The lucky country” is a nickname for Australia that’s often used favorably. The term originated in 1964 with Donald Horne’s book, The Lucky Country, which was originally intended to have a negative connotation. Today, the phrase is used to describe Australia as a land with natural resources, economic opportunities, and a good climate.

Australia is often referred to as “The Lucky Country”.

The phrase was coined by the Australian author Donald Horne in his 1964 book with the same name.

Among other things, it has been used in reference to Australia’s natural resources, weather, history, its early dependency of the British system, distance from problems elsewhere in the world, and other sorts of supposed prosperity.

Horne’s intent in writing the book was to portray Australia’s climb to power and wealth based almost entirely on luck rather than the strength of its political or economic system, which Horne believed was “second rate”.
