Yes, the message of universal rights was beset with contradictions because the rights were given only to the males in the society. The French Constitution did not give any rights to women.
Yes, I agree that the message of universal rights was beset with contradictions. The idea of universal rights meant that all human beings were supposed to be equal and should enjoy basic rights such as freedom, equality, and liberty. However, in practice, these rights were not given equally to everyone. There was a clear gap between the ideals that were being proclaimed and the way people were actually treated. One major contradiction was related to women. During the French Revolution, the ideas of liberty and equality became very popular, but women were still denied many political rights. They could participate in revolutionary activities and demand equality, yet they were not given the same political status as men.
I agree that the message of universal rights was full of contradictions. It said that everyone should have equal rights, whether they were rich or poor, male or female. However, in reality, this equality was not fully followed. During the French Revolution, women did not enjoy the same political rights as men. Even today, although we talk about equality, complete equality does not always exist. For example, there can still be differences in opportunities and pay between men and women, while rich and poor people may not have the same opportunities in life. So, the idea of universal rights was important, but putting it into practice was much more difficult.
