The Tamil Nadu government scrapped the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project after a prolonged, 1,200-day protest by residents of Parandur and 12 neighboring villages, ending a long-running battle over the site. The state cited public opposition as the reason for cancellation, with Chief Minister Vijay stating a new airport will be proposed at a location without local resistance. The Parandur site would have covered about 5,320 acres, including roughly 3,750 acres of private land the government was acquiring, despite having already secured central government site clearance. In the interim, the government plans to expand Chennai’s existing airport with a new fifth terminal to handle 20 million additional passengers annually
