A shiver down the spine is linked to the body’s “fight or flight” response, triggered by strong emotional reactions like fear or excitement. This response releases adrenaline and other stress hormones, causing the tiny muscles along your spine to contract. This physical reaction, known as piloerection, creates the sensation of a shiver or tingling along your back, as your body prepares for a perceived threat or excitement.
