The sensation of “butterflies” comes from your body’s fight-or-flight response. When you’re anxious or nervous, your brain signals your adrenal glands to release adrenaline. This hormone causes blood to be redirected from your stomach to your muscles, preparing you to react quickly. The reduced blood flow to your digestive system is what causes that fluttery feeling.
