Blushing is an involuntary response triggered by the sympathetic nervous system when you feel self-conscious or embarrassed. It causes blood vessels in your face to widen, allowing more blood to flow to the skin’s surface, making you turn red. Interestingly, it’s a uniquely human response and is thought to be a nonverbal way of showing remorse or humility.
