Playing dead, or “thanatosis,” is a survival strategy used by animals like opossums and certain insects to avoid predators. The idea is that predators often prefer live prey, so by appearing lifeless, the animal might trick the predator into losing interest. It’s an instinctive behavior that can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
