Iridescence in animals, such as peacocks and butterflies, results from microscopic structures in their feathers or wings that reflect light at different angles. These structures, called photonic crystals, cause the light to interfere and create shifting colors that change with the angle of view. This adaptation can be used for attracting mates, camouflage, or signaling.
