The white trails left by airplanes, known as contrails, form when hot, moist exhaust from jet engines meets the cold, low-pressure atmosphere at high altitudes. The water vapor in the exhaust condenses into ice crystals, creating those visible streaks. Contrails can vary in appearance depending on atmospheric conditions, sometimes lingering for hours or dissipating quickly. Despite conspiracy theories, contrails are a natural byproduct of jet engines in flight.
